Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Extended periods of low temperature can cause pipes to freeze.  The following tips can help prevent frozen pipes and protect your plumbing.

  1. Open bathroom and kitchen cabinets under sinks.  If you have children or pets, remove any potentially harmful items or chemicals before leaving cabinets open.
  2. Let faucets drip, especially those with plumbing in an outside wall.  Keeping the water moving in your pipes will help it not to freeze.  The cost of the extra water is low compared to the cost to repair a broken pipe.  Another benefit is the open faucet will relieve some pressure if the pipe does freeze, and might save you from a burst pipe.
  3. Open interior doors so warm air can circulate more freely.
  4. Insulate exposed pipe underneath homes, in crawl spaces, and in attics or basements.
  5. Use heating tape on exposed pipes.

Following these simple tips can help reduce the chance of your pipes freezing.
